I am an anthropologist, researcher, teacher, writer, feminist, and committed advocate for gender equality, peace and security, and social justice. I believe in academic freedom and scholarly research and exchange is major pillar of social, political and economic advancement. I taught for over 25 years at Concordia University in Montreal.
I have conducted field work in Iran, Egypt, and Afghanistan. My research bridges the anthropology of political economy; reproductive rights; gender and citizenship; women’s formal and informal politics; hijab and clothing as political institutions; Afghan women and youth refugees in Iran and Pakistan; women’s sports as politics; and gender and the public sphere in Muslim contexts.
I have also been actively involved in Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML) Network’s Research and Publication division since 1980s, because I believe sound research should be the foundation of advocacy for gender equality and social justice.
